Sinking ship or Lifeboat

by PJ McClure on April 16, 2012

Yesterday, April 15, 2012, was the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. As inauspicious of an occasion as that is, our pastor brought up and fantastic point that I want to tweak a little to bring to you today.

The Titanic was deemed the epitome of luxury and safety. “Unsinkable” they called it. But on that cold night in the northern Atlantic, the attitudes about the vessel changed dramatically. With panic beginning to set in and evacuation underway, something strange happened. People hesitated and refused to get into the lifeboats.

Standing here, 100 years later, it seems ridiculous. “Get on the boat you idiot! This thing is going down!” But we have to step back and see that we frequently do the exact same thing as those first few on to the lifeboats.

Just like the Titanic, our current life or circumstances are not exactly sea worthy. Maybe something has happened to cause a major issue and our alternatives are to change vessels or go down with the ship. In that moment when we have to choose, we realize how strong of a grip our current luxury or perception of safety has on us and how fearful we become of the unknown.

Those passengers were being told to leave something they had been told was the ultimate experience. Not only to leave, but to leave in a hurry, in a dinky little boat, and to be lowered down 75 feet into the darkness of the northern Atlantic. Their choice:

Stay with what I know even though it is going down or change my circumstances to something that could save me, but is unknown to me.

Framed like that, it doesn’t take us long to see the parallel. How many of us have clung to sinking ships because we wanted the surety of what we’ve always known? All the while there are opportunities to save ourselves and have a future, but we hesitate or refuse because of our fear of the unknown.

Today I’m asking you to consider your current journey. Is your vessel going to get you where you want to go or is it time to brave the unknown? Please use the comments to let me know what your dilemma might be and how we can help you make a good decision. We want to see you arrive at the destination of YOUR choice.
