Great commentary of this topic. The worry that we may be desiring only what we want and that it is not of God keeps a lot of people from pursuing God’s will for their life. If you read Psalm 37:4, it echoes this theme “delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart”. In the original Hebrew the word “of” is actually “for”. God gives us the desires FOR our heart. Those desires are what He planted there, they are from Him; when we delight ourselves in Him first.
Excellent! I would just like to add – that abiding in Christ means developing a ‘Christ Consciousness/Mindset” – his teachings/words are a means to that end.
Living in a state of “Christ consciousness” what Catholics might refer to as a “State of Grace” would automatically bring forth the pure desires of our hearts(selfless desires), which are automatically fulfilled as they are God’s desires! …and for his glorification. God is acting through you at that time.
Remember Matthew 6:26 – Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Please tell me that you wrote this message somewhere so that I can print it, frame it, and hang it in my office! I’m one of those who is constantly questioning whether what I do is God’s will or just my own will. Am I doing this because God wants me to or because I want to be noticed or feel important or…fill in the blank. You reminded me that if I’m really the Christian I claim to be, then I can know that God has aligned my will with His will. Then I can answer the more important question, “If I do this, will it bring glory to God?” It’s all about Him!

When I saw the Title I immediately thought I should read this because although God has abundantly blessed me and from a small child I have been able to see prayers answered I now wonder if the education I am pursuing so as to add to my wealth to enable me to have more to give to those less fortunate is following His will.
PJ…thank you for so clearly answering this question in a way anyone should be able to understand. It really is pretty simple…if the WORD is transforming our minds and we are seeking God (He abides in us, we in Him) He will quickly show us if our desires are selfish and not in alignment with His will! He gives us the dreams and desires and He has given us all we need to complete them…with HIM!
