It usually starts about the time we loosen our belts after Thanksgiving dinner. Our thoughts jump to overeating, being uncomfortable, and losing weight. Before long we have made the entire mental journey through the number of New Year’s resolutions we’re going to make to really get our lives on track.
It isn’t specific enough to even get started. We don’t normally have any problems realizing what we want to move away from, but we don’t give ourselves a definite direction to move toward.
If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there? We need clarity and structure. If the resolution is to lose weight, you begin the process by picking an amount or a body measurement. Something that is meaningful to the way you want to live.
Next is to pick a date. “Next year” is not an effective time frame for goal achievement. Don’t be afraid to pick a date as a mile-marker. It will give you something to shoot for a way to plan.
Now we need to continue that path of clarity by seeing the goal achieved.
This is an important, early step because having a clear picture lends itself to our human design. Our minds work in pictures and our subconscious mind is a goal-seeking machine. When we feed a clear, crisp picture to our subconscious, it begins to align our external circumstances to that internal picture.
We’ve all heard of or experienced this before. The whole idea of self-fulfilling prophecy is built around the work our subconscious minds do with our clear and emotionally charged pictures. Our job is to decide on the picture and therefore, the outcome.
Tune In
Sit quietly with your written goal in front of you. Take three deep breaths, hold them for four seconds each, and let them out to a count of six. Now read your goal to yourself aloud. When the words sink in and your mind wants to drift away to the goal achieved, close your eyes and go with it.
- What do you see?
- What will your life be like when you’ve achieved the goal?
- What will YOU be like?
- Where are you when you declare the goal achieved?
- How do you feel knowing you’ve made it?
- What’s next for you now that this is done?
Answering these questions with as much detail as possible begins the process of making it real and meaningful for you. Getting specific on everything from the plans to the payoff is the only way to make it happen.
